Flashing for charity...

PictureMe reading my flash fiction
Well, that was another fine event that Southcart Books, Walsall, got us in to... I refer, of course, t0 last Saturday's Flash Fiction extravaganza, hosted by Southcart Books and run by the three heads of independent publisher, The Penguin's Head.  A bevy of authors read a truly eclectic mix of stories, overseen by a rubber penguin's head mask; and the best part is that these stories are now to be collected in an anthology, in aid of charity The Alzheimer's Society.

Neil Sehmbhy, Strategic Director of the Penguin's Head, told a local newspaper how reading can help to improve the quality of life for someone with Alzheimer's Disease.   "Many people who were literate in their lives and had a passion for books maintain their ability to read until the end-stages of dementia".  You can read the full article and Neil's interview here.

Personally, I'm very proud to have been involved with this project, and with the chosen charity.  Two close family members both contracted Alzheimer's Disease, so I've seen first hand what its effects can be; and I hope that the anthology, when published, will be very successful in aid of this cause.  I'll keep you posted on the progress of the book, and would be very grateful if you would share it as widely as possible once released.  Keep watching this space...

Flash vs The Penguin('s Head)

Coming up this weekend at Southcart Books, Walsall’s only independent bookshop, is a flash fiction extravaganza!

Flash fiction, for the uninitiated, is basically a form of very short literature, and is a story form very close to the heart of independent publishers The Penguin’s Head.  TPH are led by the unholy triumvirate of Rob Grimes, Neil Sehmbhy and James Josiah; and James himself is the instigator of the James Josiah Flash Project, which collects the flash fiction of himself and guest contributers.

This Saturday, 7th Feb, at the kind invitation of proprietors the lovely Scott and Amy, TPH are taking over the aforementioned Southcart Books for a day full of flash fiction, featuring a bevy of authors, each reading one of their works of no more than 500 words.

And yes, I number amongst this bevy, with an entry sneaking in at 499 words (excluding title!).  I’ll be reading at 11:30 – the full author programme is below.
As usual, it’s free entry, and there will be nibbles available.

Don’t forget, not only will Southcart be full of authors on Saturday, it will also be full of many, many, lovely, collectible books – and a book makes a far more lasting Valentine’s gift than a bunch of flowers (and books about prostitutes and killer robots are always a good romantic option - Southcart being of course a stockist of my Automata Wars series).  So pop along, have a browse, have a listen and have a nibble – you know it makes sense...
